Aftereffects of Drinking Alcohol
After you drink a lot of alcohol, you may experience a hangover. A hangover, formally called veisalgia, describes the negative aftereffects of intoxication.
These aftereffects may include:
- Headache
- Nausea/Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Weakness/Dizziness
- Depression
However, it’s not just alcohol consumption that causes these symptoms. Instead, alcohol consumption causes your body to become dehydrated quickly, thereby causing these painful symptoms.
When you drink alcohol, it affects the function of your pituitary gland by stopping the production of your anti-diuretic hormone, vasopressin. Without vasopressin, your body expels all of your consumed liquids rather than allowing your organs and cells to absorb them.
In addition to expelling your water supply, your body also expels essential electrolytes like potassium and sodium and necessary carbohydrates like glycogen. The depletion of these electrolytes can result in headache, nausea and other symptoms associated with a hangover, and a depletion of glycogen can result in fatigue and weakness.
Fatigue is also due to your body’s increased production of glutamine after drinking alcohol. Glutamine decreases your ability to sleep deeply, so even if you sleep several hours after intoxication, you will probably still wake up tired.
Dehydration due to alcohol also causes your thirsty organs to steal water from your brain. This causes your brain to shrink, making its membranes tighten and pull, causing additional head pain during a hangover.
Experiencing a hangover is pretty unpleasant, and will probably make you want to give up alcohol for good. Getting rehydrated is key when you have a hangover.
Dehydration prior to drinking promotes and worsens a hangover. That said, hydrating doesn’t simply mean drinking water. While drinking water is excellent for you, your body also needs essential electrolytes in order to properly hydrate.
Coconut water is an excellent, super hydrating alternative to water because it’s rich in electrolytes. Coconut water is especially rich in potassium and sodium, which your body requires when you drink alcohol. Coconut water also contains plenty of B vitamins to boost your metabolism and vitamin C to boost your immunity. In addition to being an anti-hangover drink, coconut water can also be consumed to get rid of a hangover naturally.
Simple hangover preventatives include:
- Eating prior to drinking alcohol
- Getting enough rest prior to drinking alcohol
- Avoiding alcohol altogether if you are in poor health
Now that you know what a hangover is and how coconut water helps, read on to learn about the additional benefits that PHENOMTM Coconut Water provides.

I don’t drink often, due to my diet, but I notice when I do have a couple drinks, I am super dehydrated the next morning. I will have to give coconut water a try the next time that happens.
As a college student, I suffer from hangover quite often. While I am a big water drinker I have been hearing about coconut waters benefits and how everyone likes it! Does it have a taste? I am not a fan of sugary drinks whatsoever, but I am really interested in trying coconut water as I am a very active person and I really like to try new products! Getting back to hangovers though, from what I understand from the article is that it can be used as an anti-hangover trick… this is awesome news and I can’t wait to share it with all my friends!
Awesome! This sounds like something I need for sure. I think the 100% natural coconut water enhanced with an electrolyte boost that promotes rapid hydration is fantastic! Would definitely enjoy this product.
I am very interested in trying this product. It sounds like it may work well!
I have tried other coconut waters for hangovers, and they worked ok. Interested to see if these work better?!
When I lived in the Caribbean, a local food stall used to make their own hangover cure. The main ingredient? Coconut water! They would make a malted drink, that resembled a milk-shake. They even cracked a whole, raw egg into the mixture. All apologies to Rocky Balboa, but I think I’ll stick to PhenomWater! I like how they’ve taken an old-world cure, and updated it with the modern science to back up their claims. Can’t wait to try it!
I’m wondering if it would benefit a person to drink Phenom Coconut Water before drinking alcohol? I’m not a drinker, but I love coconut. I firmly believe that keeping your body hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to just plain make yourself feel better. I will definitely try the Phenom Coconut Water!
I’ve used other brands of coconut water after a night of drinking and they do work for the most part, but reading here there’s more vitamins on this one … I’m interested to find out how much more they will help after a night like that.
Wow, I’ve never heard of this. I will have to try it the next time I have a hangover. My husband LOVES coconut milk so I’d imagine he’d love this too. Can’t wait to try it.
We use coconut milk for milk substitute around here sometimes because my son’s girlfriend is lactose intolerant. I am looking forward to trying this water.
I love coconut. I grew up on an island, the Hawaiian island and we use coconut for anything. Maybe that’s why I love coconut anything..lol. I remember my dad using the machete to cut the top off and he would let me drink the water straight up. You can’t get more fresher than that!
I love coconut, it taste so good and i think its good for u!
I have tried other coconut waters which have alot of electrolytes. I always hear that coconut water is very good for you. I would love to try this one!
This is an age old carribean fact.
It’s a fact!
I don’t go out partying alot but I am always needing this.
I have never tried this, sounds like it would be good! Did not know that coconut water could do so many different things. I don’t know of anyone that welcomes a hangover, something to cure one is probably greatly accepted. I personally could use all the extra vitamins I can get! With a 5 month old, life can be tiring!
Coconut water is the only thing that works to truly cure a hangover. I spend my summers at the beach and often feel dehydrated after a day in the sun and a night out. I’ve made it a ritual to wake up and drink one Coconut Water in the morning. It gets me back to feeling 100% and I don’t waste the day being hungover in bed! I really want to try the Phenom Hydro.
I would love a hangover cure!!! Please send me the coupon!!!
I love coconut water. Makes sense it would help with hangovers…
I read on another article on the site that coconut water is also a diuretic, so wouldn’t that counteract your hydration efforts? Maybe the answer is to drink a lot of water in addition to the coconut water to stay hydrated, but I think the point of the article is to point out how drinking coconut water is better than water when trying to deal with a hangover (dehydration).
A friend of mine told me that their trick to avoiding a hangover is to drink a sports drink before their first drink and after their last drink. The problem for me is that sports drinks make me feel bloated and they are too sugary. I didn’t even think to try the trick using coconut water! I love the taste of it and love not feeling full after drinking it. My husband and I vacation a lot to the carribean and although there is nothing like cracking open a fresh coconut and drinking the water on the beach, phenom coconut water gives me the luxury of being able to drink wherever and whenever I want!
I will have to try this. I have been hearing so much about coconut water and how it’s good for you and now for hangovers….WOW that’s great!
After a night of heavy drinking, the next morning I feel tired, little to no energy, and nothing quenches my thirst, so this new coconut drink sounds like it would be what the doctor ordered for my hangovers. Would really like to try this new product
I have tried coconut water during hangover and it works great! It is very soothing and most required in order to get over a hangover. And it is natural, very good for your body.
would love to give coconut water a try ……i drink alot of gatorade working in the heat
I have heard many cures from Hangovers one being rubbing lemon under your armpits…which I can say I have never tried. I do not see how that works. I have heard for every alcoholic drink you had drink but that makes you have to go to the bathroom all day. This sounds like a much better idea.
water is good but this product seems better……
I was wondering if this stuff works….always heard of drinking pickle juice but this coconut water sounds a lot better!
I’ve used coconut water when travelling internationally and trying to rehydrate after ‘stomach issues’. The coconut water was much better than the rehydration salts the pharmacy had - for taste and for the natural approach. It worked great in that situation so I bet it would work for a hangover too. I plan to buy some to have on hand to try.
Really cool article and I will definitely be trying coconut water. I drink coconut milk all the time and I love it!
The best way to treat a hang over is not to get one. Instead of waiting to drink coconut water when you have a hang over, drink it inbetween alcoholic beverages and before drinking to prevent ever getting dehydrated in the first place.
I will definitely try this. Hope it works. Thx
wow! this is really interesting, I’m always looking for good hangover cures, or good hang over preventives, I always drink a lot of water, but I haven’t tried water with coconut in it and would really love too, anything that can help from getting that horrible headache! I’ve always been a fan on coconut smells, food anything!
Birthday is coming up next month. I have been reading about the use of coconut water. Would like to try it. I am usually a little slow the next morning.
when i drink i get incredibly sick the next day… very dehydrated which is why i rarely drink!
I am a Miami Native as well as is the Coconut, I am truly excited to see how GNC has enriched the water with the supplements… I love Coconut water
I have drank coconut water before after a workout or a hot yoga session but I did not know it was good for hangovers as well. Will have to try it because usually when I drink, I am very dehydrated the next morning and have to drink about 5 glasses of water to feel quenched.
Free bottle I’ll try it Coconut sounds good
I would love to try this, I have heard many benefits of coconut water, even though I have only recently heard of it.
I have tried this and it works. When I have a hangover, my electrolytes get so low that my calves cramp up when I am sleeping. Drinking coconut water makes it stop in just a few minutes. And, I always feel better.
The first time I tried coconut water as a rehydration tool was after an intense game of flag football. 80 degrees outside and 90% humidity and the coconut water did the trick! Now, I have to try it for a hangover. I usually use an electrolyte based product, but knowing how well coconut water works for strenuous activities, I think this is an awesome use for it!
That is cool I thing rehydration is a good thing when you have a hang over
I don’t drink often but when I do I really enjoy myself. And no matter what I do it seems I’m always a slug the next day. I’m constantly looking for relief so next time I think I’ll reach for some coconut water (from Phenom). I go to GNC monthly to get products for my husband and occasionally myself. Drinking coconut water is something we are both interested in trying. Can’t wait for my coupon!!
I drank coconut water the next day after a couple of nights out and it helped so so so much. I never attributed it to the coconut water until I saw this article. Now I’ll make sure to always have it on hand if we plan to go out. Thanks!
I read the first comment, and I’ve never noticed, I do get very dehydrated after drinking for a night, I’m definitely going to try this too! Right before bed and right after I wake up.
I usually drink those Rockstar recoverys after a drinking night, but I am aware energy drinks
are not so good for you. I would be happy to try a natural healthy alternative. Coconut flavor is an added bonus!
wow how interesting! never heard of this before but sounds way better than having a hangover for hours.i would LOVE to try this and will have to next time.
Tried several remedy some work better than others. I would love to try if coconut water works better than others.
I am a college student so I have experienced every degree of a hangover! Most of the time, water just does not quench my thirst. Not to mention the headaches from the dehydration. I would love to find a product that I can rely on to put the necessary vitamins and minerals and other things my body needs after a night of drinking. I definitely will be trying this!
I have heard that coconut water is really popular with stars in Hollywood. Now I think I know why
Anyway I have been dying to try it since I read that Lauren Conrad loves it. Also Coconut is one of my favorite flavors.
I’ll definitely have to try this out as I have had way too many hangovers and it would be nice not to be restricted to my couch recovering from it!
Mmm coconut water — this product sounds fantastic. And thanks to this blog, I kind of look forward to the next hangover to give this a try! Of course I hope to try Phenom’s coconut water before then as well
coconut water is not for hangovers people
While visiting India last summer I had never been exposed to extreme heat like that. Since coconuts are in abundance, I would always have a big pile of coconuts where I was staying to keep me hydrated. Although I did not try it after drinking, I did find it very useful to help with hydration. I will have to try it after a long night out.
I’m gonna need this stuff tomorrow!
I have had more hangovers then i care to remember. I have also tried many so called remedies. After several years of research, which the internet made possible, rehydration is very important, but vitamins, minerals and electrolytes are just as important. People have been known to survive on coconuts when stranded on islands. Coconut milk has also been given in war time to wounded soilders intraveiniously when there was no blood to transfuse, with good results. It must be good for you. I am gonna try it next time. Thnx for the oppurtunity.
Always re-hydrate! Headaches are from losing blood volume. Also re-plenishing electrolytes
I always drink water before, during and after a long night of drinking and partying. I also make sure I have a sports drink with me in the morning to replace electrolytes from being physically ill. Next time I will try out coconut water. I drink it in the summer all the time, its my beach treat. Dont know why I never thought to have it with me at a party, so hydrating.
im thinking that it should hydrate you since its pure
My kids are in all kinds of sports and I am looking to an alternative to all the sugary sports drinks..
I would love a hangover cure as well! Can’t wait for the coupon to see if the product really works!
I have found that as I get older..:( I have a longer recoup time from a hangover.I will give this a go to see if I can snap back after a long night of partying like I did when I was a youngster..LOL Thanks
I would love to try some and see how it tastes. I work out side in the heat and want to see if it gives me energy
This sounds like I product I need to stock up on before my next night out!
I used to drink alot and when I did I found that if after every couple of drinks I had a glass of water, I wasnt nearly as dehydrated the next day! I have heard that coconut water is a great way of replinishing your bodys need for water, but I have yet to try it! I am definatly going to get some of this water and try it!!!!!!
I have used coconut water several times for hangovers. I drink it before and after going to sleep. It really helps prevent a headache. Coconut water is the new hype, I wont be surprised if this gets really popular fast.
My hangover remedy drink of choice used to be Vitamin Water’s Revive, but now I’m thinking of switching to Phenom! Finallt a drink with all the benefits of a sports drink without all the added sugar and sodium that makes you feel worse!
Hangovers are the absolute worst. But knowing there are things like coconut water by phenom to help replinish the body. With all of what is lost from the from the fun night before, makes me really want to try it!
Whenever I drink, the next day I am incredibly thirsty, but I never want water. This would actually be a good alternative because I usually end up having leftover diet soda that I used the night before for a mixer. I was also surprised to hear that alcohol increases your production of glutamine, I never knew that’s why I wouldn’t sleep well after drinking. I’m wondering if Phenom coconut water will counteract that effect with the added nutrients? And would this drink be better to have after I come home from the bars or right away in the morning after I wake up?
Wondering how much caffeine is in the energy phenom and will that make you crash like other energy drinks?
I have not heard of Coconut Water before. I am an active person who ocassionally partakes in fermented beverages. I would love to give this product a try after a workout or night out.
I have tried too many “hangover” cures that haven’t worked. I am definitely ready to try this out. I am far too busy to be stuck in bed with a hangover. I also think that my hangovers have begun to last for not 1 but 2 days.
I’ll have to try this. i need an awesome hangover cure.
I would love this product after a night of dancing!
Just stated checking out different brands of coconut water as a post-night out hydration drink. Thanks so much for providing another option!
Ah… the elusive hangover cure. This is an enlightening article because I feel that there is actually science behind the cure whereas most hangover “cures” are simply hearsay. I’ll be sure to give this a shot after a long Friday night.
I have a friend who drinks coconut water all the time and loves it. I have a birthday coming up in a few days and I know I will be feeling the after effects the next day, so I’ll try it out and see if it can really take care of my hangover!
I am interested in trying this, I have never heard of it before.
Really looking forward to trying this!
I always try to drink coconut water before AND after a night of drinking.
When I drink, I don’t get the headache-and-light-sensitivity-hangovers. I worship the porcelin goddes. It sucks. And nothing seems to help - none of the traditional “cures”. So I am looking forward to trying coconut water - maybe that will help!!!!
I love coconut water and I have never heard of this brand before so I’m very interested in trying it!
Wish they had coconut water when I was in college. Ater reading article I know I’ve got to try this .
That is fascinating! It sounds like a miracle concoction, who would have thought that ONE drink would be able to replenish electrolytes and diminish the chances of dehydration? Definitely bringing this with me next time I go to the bar!
i have never heard of coconut water before but this seems good to try would it work to drink the water before you drink alcohol?
Fantastic tip! I had no idea that Coconut Water had hangover cure benefits!
This sounds like something great for a college student to drink the morning after a night of drinking to help recover from a hangover. It seems to help cure headaches, the nausea you may feel, the vomitting you may experience. It sounds like a great way to rehydrate after a night of drinking! I will definitely try this to see how it works.
interesting idea.
will give it a shot.
thank you
I have tried this and I like it. Be forewarned - it does not taste good. It doesn’t taste like coconut at all - it actually has kind of a bitter taste, but let me tell you - it works! There is no sugar in it, so it isn’t sweet at all. I tried the Energy one - Lemon Mojito before a work out and it gave me lots of energy. It’s not just for hangovers. If you can get past the taste - you really have to “chug” it…it’s totally worth it!
I always drink lots of water when I drink alcohol but still sometimes feel crappy the next day. I will try the coconut water with all the extra electrolytes and vitamins and hopefully it will be my new “go to” drink!
Haven’t heard any of this before. I’ll have to give this a try next time because hangovers are the worst!!!!! thnx <3
This stuff is great. I have been drinking coconut water for about a year. The taste took a few bottle to get used to. Get it very cold and it is great… especially after a good workout or a night of being on the wrong side of 1 too many. No Need for G@t0r@de any more.
It makes sense that this drink would help rehydrate you and even energize after having a night out. Its tastes the best super cold and will help with the dry mouth when you wake up in the morning
good luck you late night party-ers!
