Top 10 Reasons to Drink Coconut Water

Share article:

Face it, plain old bottled water is just that—plain and old. Not to mention, it often contains nothing more than purified tap water, and not the natural spring water we expect.

Coconut water is an all natural alternative to water, and it offers even more benefits to your bodies. And of course, coconut water doesn’t come from a tap, so you can rest assured you’re drinking the real thing from its natural source, a coconut palm.

Read on to learn about 10 excellent reasons to put down your water, sports drink or soda, and drink coconut water.

1. It’s Super Hydrating
Coconut water is considered a super hydrating beverage because it is rich in electrolytes, including:

  • Potassium
  • Chloride
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Phosphate

Our bodies require these electrolytes, but when we sweat, we begin to lose them. In order to replenish, most people turn to sports drinks or electrolyte-enhanced water. However, sports drinks are flooded with tons of sugar and high levels of sodium, which coconut water naturally avoids.

2. It’s All Natural
Unlike sports drinks and sodas that contain lots of additives, coconut water has one simple, all natural ingredient: coconut water. Coconut water is the clear liquid inside of young, green coconuts. It is consumed raw, which allows it to maintain all of its nutritional value.

For thousands of years, coconut water has been enjoyed throughout South East Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Today, we can bottle and ship coconut water safely from its natural source, so we can enjoy it fresh almost anywhere.

3. It’s Fat-Free and Low-Calorie
Comprised mainly of water, coconut water is naturally fat-free and low in calories. This alone makes coconut water an excellent alternative to the many fatty, highly caloric juice blends, sodas and sports drinks available to us.

4. It’s Cholesterol-Free
Sodas and sports drinks can contain between 15 mg and 30 mg (5-10% of your daily value) of cholesterol per serving.

If you’re looking to lower your cholesterol or keep bad cholesterol out of your body, it may be a good idea to switch your beverage of choice to cholesterol-free coconut water.

5. It’s Naturally Sweetened
Slightly more refreshing than ordinary water, yet not as overwhelmingly, make-you-gag sweet as soda, coconut water offers a subtle, naturally sweetened fruit flavor.

And don’t worry, coconut water is not as coconut-y as its name suggests. The slight sweet flavor is complemented by a bit of tart and just a dash of coconut, making it very hard to confuse the taste of coconut water with any other coconut product.

6. It’s Low in Sodium
Though our bodies require sodium to recover from electrolyte loss through sweating, too much sodium can cause health problems like high blood pressure. Since 90% of Americans get too much sodium, drinking low-sodium coconut water, as opposed to salty sports drinks or sodas, may help keep your sodium intake down.

7. It Promotes Healthy Skin and Hair
Coconut water can be used as a light moisturizer that decreases oiliness and promotes healthy hair, skin, and even nails. Coconut water can also be added to moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, and baths.

8. It Aids Digestion and Promotes Weight-Loss
Coconut water is a natural diuretic and a good source of dietary fiber. As a diuretic, coconut water increases urine flow. In addition, the dietary fiber in coconut water helps shorten transit time through the intestinal tract.

9. It Boosts Circulation
Because it’s so rich in electrolytes, drinking coconut water can help balance your body’s pH levels. In addition, coconut water has the same electrolyte range levels as your blood. When you drink coconut water, it enters your bloodstream giving your already present electrolytes an extra burst of energy.

10. It Helps You Rehydrate When You Have a Hangover
Because of coconut water’s super hydrating power (among all of its other aforementioned good looks and charm), it’s an excellent way to rehydrate, motivate and re-energize your body after night of drinking.

I had no idea that coconut water existed or had benefits. I have PCOS and diabetes. I also have digestive issues, I have tried so many things but have never once tried something like this. I am not a big fan of medicine but I love hollistics and home remedies. drinking coconut water is a great alternative to drinking just regular water. It’s more beneficial and healthy. Everyone knows how we need to be well hydrated and what’s better doing this with coconut water? I am here to tell you this is not a fad! I am 40 years old and was involved is sports up until the first year of college. During that time I ate what I wanted and stayed at a health weight of around 220 with some good muscle mass. 15 years of IT work and no sports while eating the same has taken it’s toll to the tune of 282 pounds with not much muscle mass.I mad my mind up. I was going to shed the weight. I started doing the protein shakes in the AM.. I used cow’s milk instead of watre because I could not stomach the water. The cow;s milk irritated by IBS and was a little fattening. Almond milk wasn’t bad, but tended to be a little sweet and make my shakes thick. I then had a real pina coloda one night with the coconut cream in it. I thought man I want to try the Coconut milk. I thought it would get rid of the thickness of the shake, be asd good if not better tasting that milk and certainly better than using water in my mix. I was Right!!!!! Coconut Water was the perfect middle road for me and has helped me stomach the shakes in the morning and was a huge contributor to my 75 pound weight loss in 7 months.
Viva la Coconut Water!! I bet it could double as a sun screen in an emergency too!

Now, living on the mainland, I don’t have access to it like that. Also, when I was younger and drinking it, I didn’t even realize it had any other benefit than tasting great! :) My mom and I actually got a giggle out of people selling coconut water! Now that I know the benefits of it(other than just tasting great), I will be adding this to my own diet. I especially love that it’s low in calorie, low in sodium and that it promotes weight loss! So, seriously, the other day she got so desperate that she asked me if I would buy her a coconut so she could try drinking the milk. And I’m not just saying that because I’m replying to this blog. I haven’t bought her the coconut yet (why would I drive to the store especially to buy a coconut that she would be afraid to drink?) and she has been been obsessed about drinking coconut milk. Now I can get her coconut water, she will get to feed her obsession with coconuts, and I will be tricking her into drinking water! What a great combination! Oh, and I want to drink it too. For me this isn’t ONLY alluring for the fact that something free is involved. For me, this is about getting back to basics and returning to good health. In this consumer-based market of energy drinks, bars, and waters, it’s sometimes difficult to ascertain what is the best… what is pure… what is bonafide.

I’m seeking a “drink” that I can use regularly, that will benefit me and my health.

Perhaps Phenom Coconut Water will take care of these values and concerns.

They’re so bombarded by all of the sugary drinks out there-I’m glad to find a healthy alternative! Kind of funny to see the part about helping a hangover. I’m a tea-totaler, so that doesn’t interest me much. It makes me laugh, though, since this is such a HEALTHY product…kind of counter-intuitive to drink too much (unhealthy) alcohol to use this product as a remedy, no? I’m just sayin’!

I’m sure you know how this is going to turn out - I left it up to him to figure it out, and the result was lots of banging in the garage! All to no avail, he just dented the thing. His dad thought he should drill a hole in it, but the novelty had worn off by then, and no one ever did anything with that coconut. I wonder about the ‘flavors’ that these come in because I’m often greatly disappointed when I taste something that is suppose to be, let say orange, and it tastes nothing like a refreshing orange would taste. Have always had a hard time simply drinking “water” throughout the day. I like having options and imo this is a great one. Tastes fine, good nutrients. Just thinking that I’m doing something “healthy” also tends to benefit me greatly as well. It’s a good product and I’ll likely continue to drink it. Is a bit costly, but so is just about anything that is good for you anymore.

  148. Zach says:

One of the things that I’ve noticed with sports drinks is that the more you need one, the harder they are to drink. Gatorade while sitting at your desk is somewhat bland. Gatorade after a marathon is almost too sweet to drink. When you need to get electrolytes back in you, water won’t work and most sports drinks are unpalatable. I’ve honestly found this to be the perfect balance of palatability and nutrition.

  149. Lynn Bolton says:

Interesting. I’ve tried coconut milk but wasn’t too impressed because the fat content seemed a little high. It was an organic brand I purchased at the store - so I like that this is naturally fat free!!
Can’t wait to try this. And I very anxious to try the moisturizing part in my bath :)

  157. edward says:
