There has been a lot of hype around coconut water lately. Yet, this all natural beverage has been enjoyed by people around the world for thousands of years.

What is it that sets coconut water apart from other beverages on the market today?

Read on to learn more about the nutrition facts and benefits of coconut water.

1. Coconut water is rich in essential electrolytes.
Electrolytes are electrically charged ions that help your cells maintain and transmit voltages and impulses to and from other cells. Electrolytes play a vital role in your body, especially in maintaining proper functionality of your nerves, heart, and other muscles.

The electrolytes present in your body include:

  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Chloride
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Phosphate
  • Bicarbonate
  • Sulfate

Of these electrolytes, coconut water contains about 600 mg of potassium (17 percent of your daily value) per serving. That’s more than a banana.

Coconut water is also rich in:

  • Magnesium, 60 mg per serving or 15 percent of your daily value
  • Sodium, 252 mg per serving or 11 percent of your daily value
  • Calcium, 58 mg per serving or 6 percent of your daily value

But if these electrolytes are already in your body, why would you need to ingest more?

Every time you sweat or lose a lot of fluids due to sickness, you also lose important electrolytes, especially potassium and sodium. In order to repair your body, you need to replenish your electrolyte levels with foods and drinks that are rich in electrolytes.

2. Coconut water contains zero additives.
Coconut water is an all natural beverage that comes from its source, a young, green coconut. That said, coconut water’s one and only ingredient is coconut water, which means its additive-free.

Very few beverages on the market today can say that. Most juice blends, sodas, and sports drinks contain huge amounts of refined sugars, artificial colors, preservatives and high fructose corn syrup blends.

3. Coconut water is fat-free and low in calories.
Fat-free coconut water contains a mere 46 calories per serving and zero grams of fat and zero grams of trans fat.

Meanwhile, most sports drinks and sodas contain harmful trans fats that should and can easily be avoided.

4. Coconut water is cholesterol-free.
As it contains no fat or trans fat, coconut water also contains zero cholesterol. Many sodas and sports drinks can contain between 15 mg and 30 mg (5-10% of your daily value) of cholesterol per serving.

5. Coconut water contains all natural sugar.
Coconut water contains about 6 g of sugar per serving. However, the sugar in coconut water is all natural fruit sugar, not refined sugar that you find in highly processed foods and drinks.

6. Coconut water is rich in vitamins.
The vitamins in coconut water help you maintain healthy cellular function, boost your immunity and promote your metabolism.

The essential vitamins in coconut water include:

Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps boost immunity. Each serving of coconut water contains about 5.8 mg of vitamin C, which is about 10 percent of your daily value.

B Vitamins
Coconut water contains vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1) and Folate (B9). These B vitamins work together to breakdown foods and create energy by boosting metabolism.

B vitamins also have other important roles in your body. For instance, B6 helps your body produce amino acids needed to build protein. B6 also promotes metabolism and the creation of neurotransmitters.

In addition, Riboflavin assists in the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, Thiamin maintains healthy nervous and circulatory systems, and Folate promotes healthy mental function and brain development, especially in fetuses.

7. Coconut water is a natural diuretic.
As a diuretic, coconut water increases urine flow.

8. Coconut water contains a large amount of dietary fiber.
Dietary fiber helps you digest food, and it also shortens waste transit time through the intestinal tract. Like a diuretic, dietary fiber helps to rid your body of harmful toxins.

Coconut water contains about 3 g of dietary fiber oer serving, which is about 11% of your daily value.

9. Coconut water contains protein.
Protein is absolutely necessary for the growth and repair of your muscles, bones, hair, skin, and eyes. Protein is also essential for digestion and the creation of antibodies.

Coconut water provides you with about 2 g of protein per serving, which makes up about 4% of your daily value.

10. Coconut water is safe to drink for all ages.
Because coconut water is all natural, fat-free, and low in sugars and calories while being rich in essential electrolytes and vitamins, it’s safe for almost anyone to drink.

This sounds great, nothing odd. Real sugar with the fiber sounds really balanced.A natural product.

  2. Melissa says:

My SIL is Hawaiian and told me that they are able to use coconut water for blood transfusions. Here is something I found that explains it better.
Coconut water can’t actually replace blood plasma; chemical analysis indicates it’s closer in makeup to intracellular fluid. It’s usually sterile, and when mixed with plasma it behaves like saline solution. It’s got fewer electrolytes in it than our bodies are used to and too much potassium, so it’s not an ideal rehydration fluid. But it works in a pinch.

  3. Abby says:

I am wondering where all of these coconuts that give us this coconut water come from? I know each coconut holds a decent amount of water, but it seems very time intensive to extract all of that water. Is all of this coconut water directly from coconuts or is some of it artificially produced?

  4. Serena says:

PHENOM™ will be my only sports drink from now on…but I would appreciate a little sponsorship? I know that when I drink it, all my friend will too. I am competitive in tennis, soccer, and golf. The last thing I want to drink on a golf course is soda or beer! The only question I have for PHENOM™ is, “Will the container keep the coconut water cool for a while?”

Plain Hydro is a little weird, but the Energy and the Mega V line seem to taste a lot better. Lemon Mojito is probably the best for a mild refreshing citrus. Maybe it’s kind of like Red Bull, where this will be big, even though the taste is pretty out there? I hope so!… Unlike RB, it is actually healthy! I love that Coconut water provides a lot of the most essential nutrients and electrolytes that you need to get through your day! It has lower calories and sodium that most other drinks such as sodas and high calorie juices on the market today, and I most especially like that of these daily electrolytes that we need, coconut water contains about 600 mg of potassium per serving. That is more than a banana! On top of all those benefits, it is super yummy and tastes awesome!!!

For a nutritional weight loss dessert, try to substitute coconut water up to 80% of the liquid content used in a typical jello recipe. Perfect way to satisfy craving for sweets, cool down body temperature in the summer heat, and get all the nutrients coconut water can afford.

Coconut water helps keep my water levels balanced. The water helps keep me hydrated, but I don’t get the water “slosh” where you feel liquidy in the stomach.

We are learning about the secretion and absorption of these ions in the urine in my biochemistry class. I realize we secrete a lot, so we need to maintain these ions in our body in order for it to sufficient. I rarely drink water, and i know its bad, how can i improve?

I use coconut water instead of pedialyte for my children when they’re sick. Pedialyte and other generic subs have way too many chemicals and artificial flavors and colors – not healthy, but the kiddos need to be hydrated and get electrolytes replaced – so coconut water is great for that!
You can use it when they’ve got a fever, or diarrhea or any other time you’d use pedialyte.

It tastes pretty nice, too, so it’s easier to get them to drink it than pedialyte.

  117. Kem says:

I got my free sample from GNC and good thing it was free or I would demand my money back! This stuff is down right 100% grade A crap. Took one sip and spit it out right away. Now I have to deal with this horrible taste in my mouth the rest of the day. This product will be an E P I C failure. I pitty those who actually like it. I hope you are getting paid well to say that.

i love that coconut water is such a great source of electrolytes, while being completely natural. i can honestly say, gatorade is a thing of the past- no more “sports” drinks either.
