What’s Coconut Water?

Coconut water is the clear liquid inside of young, green coconuts. Coconut water drinks are popular in tropical countries, including South East Asia, South America, and the Pacific Islands. In such places, coconut water is as common, if not more common, than orange juice. Locals enjoy coconut water directly out of the coconut or in cans or bottles.

Because it’s extremely high in potassium and other essential electrolytes, coconut water is also considered a super hydrating sports recovery drink. Coconut water is also:

  • Low in calories
  • Fat-free
  • Naturally sweetened
  • Cholesterol-free

What’s Coconut Milk?
On the other hand, we have coconut milk. Coconut milk is the creamy, white liquid used as a cooking base. Unlike coconut water, which is raw, coconut milk must be prepared.

There are two types of coconut milk: thick and thin. To prepare thick coconut milk, the meat of a brown coconut must be grated through cheesecloth. To prepare thin coconut milk, the grated meat must be soaked in warm water and then squeezed a second or third time. Or, you can always pick up coconut milk in a can at your grocery store.

Unlike coconut water, coconut milk has a high oil and sugar content, which makes it much richer and sweeter than coconut water.

Now that you know the differences, read on to figure out what’s the best coconut drink for you.

What’s the Better Coconut Drink?

If you’re looking to rehydrate after a workout or day in the sun, coconut water is the better drink for you. Coconut water will revitalize and re-energize your body by replenishing valuable electrolytes lost through sweating.

But, if you’re looking for a delicious way to prepare a dessert, curry or creamy cocktail, then coconut milk is the better drink for you. If you’re vegan, coconut milk can also make an excellent substitute for dairy products.

I learned that coconut water aids in the quick absorption of drugs and makes their peak concentration into the blood stream easier because of its electrolytic effect. It also helps to maintain the human body’s natural fluid levels. So whenever I’m on any medication, I take it with coconut water. It sure beats a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down! :-)
